Tap Water – What You Should Know
In 2019, residues of the carcinogenic substance chlorothalonil were found in tap water during inspections in the canton of Zurich. In one out of three samples taken, the pesticide was present in an elevated dose. Such exceedances of limit values occur repeatedly. Should one be afraid to drink tap water now?
Can You Drink Tap Water?
The tap water provided in Switzerland meets very high quality standards and is considered the best-controlled foodstuff in Switzerland. To be considered as drinking water, water must meet the strict requirements of the TBDV (ordinance of the EDI on drinking water as well as water in publicly accessible baths and shower facilities). Almost two-thirds of the Swiss population regularly drink tap water, with every second person doing so several times a day. The requirements for water quality have increased significantly in recent years. The strict control of tap water allows tap water to be drunk without hesitation in most cases.
However, contaminations of tap water occur from time to time. This is mainly due to the fact that the water supplier is only responsible for the drinking water quality up to the water meter. However, contaminants can also enter the tap water later via the house pipes. Therefore, it can be useful to regularly test tap water.
Where Does Tap Water Come From?
In Switzerland, drinking water comes from:
➥ 40% from spring water
➥ 40% from groundwater
➥ 20% from surface water
Due to Switzerland's geological structure, about 60% of the water obtained is of impeccable quality and does not even need to be treated anymore! However, surface water, which is used for drinking water purposes, undergoes a multi-stage, costly treatment. The water obtained is then distributed to the end consumer via an extensive distribution network after thorough checks.
Why Is It Useful to Test Your Tap Water?
According to Swiss law, the water supplier is only responsible for the impeccable quality of water up to the water meter. However, contaminants can still enter the tap water afterwards.
Why Should You Regularly Test Your Own Tap Water?
Contaminations in water often originate from the following sources:
➔ Faucets (e.g., fittings with hoses), aerators (perlators)
➔ Water filters
➔ Water heaters (drinking water heaters, drinking water storage tanks)
➔ Coarse particle filters (lack of maintenance)
➔ Technical systems
➔ Wells for self-sufficiency
Regular self-checks also ensure excellent water quality in your own home.
Why a Tap Water Test Can Be Useful for You:
➥ You regularly drink your tap water.
➥ Your water shows abnormalities in color, smell, and taste.
➥ Babies, children, pregnant women, or sick people live in your household (they are particularly susceptible to water pollutants).
➥ You use tap water for preparing baby food.
➥ You live in a house that may be older than 100 years. There may still be lead pipes in the house installation.
➥ You use your tap water for a water carbonator.
Regular monitoring ensures excellent water quality even in your own home.
How Can I Have My Tap Water Tested?
You can easily order self-testing kits in our shop. You simply and flexibly take the samples yourself. Your water will then be analyzed in a specialized laboratory.
To test tap water, you will receive a test kit that includes everything for sampling:
➥ suitable sample containers
➥ data collection form with instructions
➥ practical return box including return label
You can take your water sample according to the instructions whenever and wherever you like. This way, you can independently and autonomously test your
tap water. After taking the water sample, it will be sent to the laboratory using the return box. In the sample acceptance, your data will be digitized and processed by IT. The laboratory analysis of your water sample will be carried out by experienced and qualified laboratory personnel.
Subsequently, you will receive your analysis results shortly.
Get Your Results in Just 3 Steps
❶ You can easily order the test kit for the analysis here in our shop. Our water test kit will be conveniently sent to your home within a short time.
❷ You take the water sample yourself. Thanks to the detailed instructions, you do not need any previous knowledge. Now all you have to do is send the test kit to the provided address. In the laboratory, your sample is examined for all parameters of the test.
❸ Our experts will examine your sample in the laboratory. Afterwards, you will receive a comprehensive result that clearly explains all measured values with the help of graphics.
How Much Does a Tap Water Test Cost?
A tap water test uncomplicatedly determines the water quality of your tap water as well as the condition of your pipes and fixtures. A particularly fast method for checking certain parameters is test strips, which usually provide an immediate result. Such tests are often available for just a few francs. Quick tests provide a good and fast orientation but usually cannot display the measured parameters very precisely.
If you want to check the condition of your tap or well water more accurately, a laboratory analysis is therefore recommended.
However, the question naturally arises about the costs of such an analysis!
Depending on the scope of the required water analysis, the price of a professional laboratory analysis ranges between 75 CHF and 100 CHF. With such laboratory analyses, you receive an analysis for self-monitoring.
If a laboratory analysis is required to be valid as a template for authorities, the sampling must be carried out by a trained sampler. In this case, additional costs for travel and sampling arise.
In addition, the price for a drinking water analysis varies depending on the parameters to be examined. The more parameters to be examined, the more expensive the analysis becomes. Therefore, combination analyses are particularly recommended here. For example, our Opti Water Test costs 94 CHF and examines a total of 17 parameters.
